A two-year-old baby dumped in the pit toilet for 19 days by her mother from Bucanana, KwaZulu-Natal, was found alive.   On November 19, 2022, a 14-year-old mother allegedly dumped her baby in a pit toilet; the baby was found on December 6 in a hypercritical condition after surviving in the toilet for 19 days. This followed after the baby’s father rejected the child.   According to 1KZNTV, the child’s mother, who is reportedly 14 years old, dumped the baby after her boyfriend rejected it.   The baby was immediately rushed to the hospital, and the baby’s gender remains unknown.

On the other hand, a three-year-old baby from a Tshino Nditwanin village in Limpopo was declared dead by police in a pit toilet on December 5, 2022.   According to reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the three-year-old boy was last seen by his uncle on Sunday morning between 07:30 and 08:30. His parents then reported the matter to the police.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the Search and Rescue Unit, joined by the K9 Search and Rescue Team, the Provincial Search and Rescue Unit, EMS, and the local police, started with a search operation that culminated in this horrific discovery.   The members then started digging the pit toilet after conducting tests to determine what might be inside. “The body was subsequently found and was handed over to the local police,” he said.

Limpopo Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, vowed special appreciation for the high levels of commitment and combied achievement exhibited by K9 Search and Rescue, Provincial Search and Rescue, Local Police, EMS, and community members.   He further said, “These kinds of incidents can only be avoided if we, as parents, exercise extra caution and care and look after our children at all times.”
