Sol Plaatje University’s (SPU) Student Representative Council (SRC) president, Aifheli Israel Mulovhedzi, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a first-year female student on Friday, 21 April 2023.

Mulovhedzi, a fourth-year student, is said to have assaulted a female student at one of SPU’s Campus residences. The female student is said to have been transported to a hospital after she sustained injuries from the incident.

The pictures posted on social media show the victim with bruises on her body, broken fingernails and a bruised eye. ISpotDaily interviewed some students from the University, with many expressing disappointment in Mulovhedzi as he is said to have allegedly preached against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Students also revealed how they were disappointed with how the university took time to release a media statement regarding the incident, “yet they gave first-year students t-shirts with a message that says Stop GBV printed at the back”.

However, SPU Communications, through an internal email sent to its Staff and Students and a media statement on their website, said that it’s aware of the incident and has since temporarily suspended Mulovhedzi.

“In the interim, the University has instituted an investigation into the matter and will follow its disciplinary procedures and protocols. The alleged perpetrator will be temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure until the investigation has been finalised,” read the statement.

The University further assured the SPU community that it doesn’t “tolerate violent or criminal behaviour by its staff and students”.
