The incident took place just weeks after the commissioner of Correctional Services, Makgothi Thobakgale, headed a search operation at the prison centre to clear it of any illegal objects. This served as part of its usual security operation.

During the search, illegal items were found in prison cells, such as wires, cellphones, and dangerous self-made weapons.
