A 28-year-old Tanzanian man has been arrested by police in Mpumalanga after he was found with drugs worth more than R1 million during festive operations in the province.
According to Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, the suspect was arrested on the N17 road, where officials were conducting stop-and-searches that were part of the operations. The suspect is said to have been driving a silver Subaru with Gauteng registration plates when his vehicle was stopped.
“His vehicle was stopped, and a search was conducted by the vigilant members, who discovered a large volume of dagga (weighing about 282, 70 kg) inside some plastic bags wrapped with sellotape. “He was nabbed and charged with dealing in dagga,” said Mohlala.
Preliminary investigations conducted revealed that the male was a Tanzanian national, and investigators are working with Home Affairs to ascertain his status in the country. It is said that more charges could be added.
“More charges could be added against the suspect as the investigation continues.”
“He is expected to appear in the Chief Albert Luthuli Magistrate’s Court today, December 22, 2022, facing the said charges,” said Mohlala.
Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has since reassured the citizens that law enforcement agencies are working hard to ensure that members of the public enjoy their festive season in peace.
