North West – A 45-year-old cigarette smuggler was released on bail at the Lehurutshe Magistrates Court after he was arrested at the Skilpadshek port for being in possession of illicit cigarettes on the 26th of September 2022.

According to reports, Tawanda Maxwell Tavuya was arrested after a search was conducted on the truck he was driving from Zimbabwe to South Africa via Botswana. During the search, illicit cigarettes with a street value of R1.5 million were discovered in a false compartment.

Tavuya appeared in court on October 29th, 2022 at the Lehurutshe Magistrates’ Court and was released on R4000 bail and the case was postponed to October 27,2022.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Prevention (DPCI) is investigating. The North West’s provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, has since lauded the members for their alertness that led to the successful arrest.

Kwena also reiterated that police are also working together with law enforcement agencies to ensure that those who transgress the law at port entries are brought to book.
