The African National Congress’s Dada Morero has been elected as the new City of Johannesburg Executive Mayor following a vote of no confidence in the DA’s Mpho Phelatse.

Despite Phelatse’s earlier attempts to stop the special sitting by lodging an urgent interdict at the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg and calling on Joburg’s residents for support, she still got out.

Dada Morero stood unopposed at the election as his name was the only one brought forward during the nominations, with the DA and IFP choosing to abstain from participating in the proceedings.

Today’s victory means that the ANC has successfully taken back control of the country’s economic hub.
