Northern Cape – Copper thief Keanan Minaar, 28, was handed down a 15-year prison sentence for stealing copper at the De Aar Regional Court.

 

It is said that on the 16th of November 2021, patrolling offers were stopped by residents alerting them about a Cooper theft in progress. It was then that Minaar was caught red-handed with Telkom copper cables he stole from the Transnet premises in De Aar and was arrested on the scene.

The copper that Minaar is said to have stolen was only worth R2500, but the damage he caused to essential infrastructure cost about R100 000. Minaar remained in custody until his sentencing as police opposed bail.

 

The Acting District Commander for Pixley Ka Seme District, Brig Nomana Adonis, commended D/Sgt Rienest Brand of the De Aar Detectives for the thorough investigation and also thanked the community for their assistance in this regard. The Northern Cape SAPS have since welcomed the sentencing.
