A 38 year old Kwazulu natal man was killed in a shack fire after several homes were gutted in a fire on Sunday morning in Waterloo.

It is said that Reaction Unit South Africa was called to the scene by residents requesting assistance. On arrival they found that several homes on one property engulfed in flames.

“Residents were attempting to extinguish the fire with buckets of water. The Ethekwini Fire & Rescue Services arrived shortly thereafter and battled the blaze. The charred remains of a man were discovered amongst the debris” said RUSA

According to the brother of the deceased, he was asleep in the main building when his wife alerted him to the fire. When he got out of the house he found his tenants, removing their valuables from several single rooms makeshift homes on the property.

It is said that the fire, then spread rapidly through the rest of the buildings whilst the deceased was still inside his shack. The main building is said to have been extensively damaged in the fire.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
